In sport you work hard to find participants, but do you really know who you are looking for?
Are you hoping they roll up and register? Are you just aimlessly drift netting for more participants?
As you start putting everything in place to grow your participation base, are you sure everyone in your sport agrees with the way forward?
Are you sure participation is a key focus for all key stakeholders, and they know it’s importance?
Do you know ‘why’ people come to your sport?
Have you asked yourselves “Who does our sport primarily exist to benefit and what benefit do they expect?”.
This can be challenging, and also be enlightening. It may alter the view of who you are as a sport.
Whatever the case, it is crucially important to accept that participation is not separate, or of lesser value to other parts within your sport. It needs to be treated equally.
You already know participation plays a critical role in creating investment in future participants, volunteers, fans, & revenue.
What you need to do is be clear on who your benefactors are and who you are.
Does your sport or organisation know your purpose?
If you don’t know why your sport exists, then you can’t find aligned participants.
Find yourself, and you will find who your sport benefits.
Have a great day!
