Being in business or undertaking a process without a clear outcome is pointless and a waste of time.
Not to mention frustrating and costly.
In your business, there are key metrics that drive success, year in, year out.
You know what yours are right now, but are they the real key to successful outcomes?
What about if you wash them against your purpose?
Outcomes are deliberately the last key pillar of commitment you make because you now have a purpose, brand and behaviours to clarify and drive what your actual outcomes need to be.
If you choose ‘making money’ as an outcome, there are infinite ways to do so. So this doesn’t clarify or narrow what your key outcome needs to be.
An outcome you choose may be ‘be innovative’. Again, innovative regarding what?
What do you and your business need to focus on as key outcomes that provide a platform or environment for those two things above to come to fruition.
For example, ‘retaining purpose driven and high performing staff’ may be a great step towards achieving revenue targets and innovation.
Is this a key outcome that you need to focus your time on?
If so, then focus on that.
Lets face it, if you don’t, you may spend all your time finding new staff, losing intellectual property when people leave and have no continuity in performance. How is revenue and innovation looking now?
Avoid outcomes that are going distract you and your team with things that make little to no difference to your ongoing success.
It’s important that time is taken to understand deeply which key outcomes are yours.
But here’s the real trap!
It’s also important to ensure you don’t make outcomes the priority.
We’ve all heard ‘focus on the process, and the result will follow’.
If you make outcomes your priority, you just become busy doing ‘things’ to get ‘things’ done.
All purposeful focus is lost.
Brand and behaviours will be discarded and trashed to try and ensure outcomes are met, and all costs.
You need to be specific around key outcomes that zero in on what drives your purpose.
Only then will you move towards being a truly high performance team.
Have a great day!
