Everyone has a brand.
Your brand is not what you say it is, and it’s not what someone tells you it is. Your brand is what someone tells someone else it is.
Your brand is being assessed every day by everyone.
It’s no different from a business or product brand. It requires goodwill based on reputation.
Leadership is the same.
So with your purpose guiding your direction, who do you have to be to fulfill your purpose?
If you can’t reach or impact others due to a poor reputation (brand), then delivering on your purpose will be difficult.
If others were asked to describe you, what would they say?
How would they describe your attitude, behaviour, reliability, the way you treat people?
As a business, how would your customers (future, current and past) describe you to others?
How would they describe your professionalism, presentation, service or value?
What about your consistency with those attributes?
Are you delivering on your personal or business brand every day?
Brands build (or lose) trust through consistency. Consistency on delivering on their promise daily.
Think of your favourite drink? A big part of the reason you like that drink is it tastes the same, each and every time. You trust what you are going to get. If each time you bought that drink, it tasted different, it wouldn’t take long for you to stop buying it.
Same with your brand.
If your brand promises one thing, then you are inconsistent in delivering that promise each and every time, your brand will soon be damaged.
Whether you acknowledge it or not, you already have a brand.
Your natural qualities are the key. You need to identify and amplify what’s good about them and be consistent in delivering on them.
Keep it simple. Only choose two or three attributes you want to focus on, improve and master.
If you keep delivering on those daily, you will shape your brand accordingly and that’s how others will see it.
The great thing is you control your brand. It can be whatever you want it to be.
Once you have defined your brand, you have also defined your third key pillar of commitment!
Have a great day!
